The Nichos Display Guide
Use this guide to find detailed information about items displayed in the Nichos, shown at the image at right. Nichos are recesses within the Sanctuary that are used to display objects representing the congregation’s interests, values, and principles. Historically, they are handmade shadowbox displays originating from Central and South American folk art. They served as portable shrines, altars or memorials (source: AI Overview).
Church volunteers change the Nichos periodically to refresh the display with objects that represent the congregation’s current concerns.
The Nichos Display, debuting in October 2025, reflects the congregation’s intention to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community. A Nichos Display Task Force, comprised of church-member volunteers, worked for over ten months to collect or create objects, obtain necessary permissions where applicable, and write descriptions of the objects’ provenance and their relevance to UU beliefs and values.
