5:00 pm: African-American History Exhibit Viewing

February 1, 2023

February is Black History Month a nation-wide celebration of African American history and accomplishments. Start your celebration with a visit to the current African American History exhibit in the Social Hall! Created by historian and law professor Dr. Sherri Burr, the exhibit provides a comprehensive view of 400 years of African American history in a single location. If you haven’t seen it yet, don’t miss it.
If you would like to see it again, please do! Composed of many images taken from history and document excerpts that provide context, the exhibit is worth a second look. Images taken from prints, drawings, and news clippings from the days of legal slavery provide a compelling view of our country’s racist past, which arguably continues to this day. Images of historical figures like Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglas are also on display. Most images may be purchased.
The exhibit can be viewed on Sunday mornings, and on select weekdays, co-hosted by the Arts & Aesthetics Committee and the Widening the Circle Group. Contact Peggy Roberts at docpegasus@gmail.com for weekly dates, or keep an eye on the broadsheet and Orders of Service calendar. Arts & Aesthetics Committee representatives are available during exhibit hours for sales of prints.

10:00 am: All YoUUth

February 5, 2023

Join Youth Programs Coordinator Alana Rodriguez each week for our religious education program for 6th-12th grade.

10:00 am: Religious Education for Children

February 5, 2023

Our Rainbow Principles curriculum for 2022–23 will begin September 11 and we’ll start with learning about our chalice. The second and third week we’ll learn about covenant and create our own together. Children will have the opportunity to create their own chalice each week in September.
Class starts at 10:00 am. Each 45-minute class will begin with a song led by one of our UU musicians, and then a chalice lighting and check-in: the Roses and Thorns that are our children’s Joys and Concerns. We’ll read a story together and talk about its meaning. Then we play. A variety of activities are available for children to choose from, and volunteer RE leaders and assistants companion the children, talking, playing, and building relationship. We end at 10:45 so that volunteers and families have the time to go to the service together or get settled on our playground.
Each month, we’ll explore how we live another Unitarian Universalist Principle together. In October, we’ll explore the first Rainbow Principle: Respect the worth and dignity of each person. I hope that you will join our community!

12:30 pm: Addiction Recovery Ministry Meeting

February 5, 2023

Our twice-monthly meetings are addiction support meetings where someone provides a topic or reading, and we share together. We do not focus on one specific addiction—many are represented. Our focus on being together is support and recovery. Expectations for those who attend extend from just listening to participating fully. We cherish honesty and openness, confidentiality, integrity, and compassion.
If you are looking for support, join us at 12:30 pm right after services.
Meeting ID: 961 4648 2750
Passcode: 425559
Contact us at recovery@uuabq.org for more information or if you need our support.

12:30 pm: Young Adults

February 5, 2023

The Young Adults affinity group meets every Sunday to offer space to partner in church community life, build friendships, and contemplate religious themes together. Join us from 12:30-1:30 pm in the Arnold room (we ask that masks be worn) or online via Zoom/Discord. This group is geared towards those ages 18-35 years old and anyone who feels being in this group would deepen their belonging at First U. This year, we are planning to grow our community presence with more youth ministry and we are excited to welcome new and familiar faces.
For more information, please find us on Realm at Groups > Affinity Group > Young Adults, or text Ollie Bradstreet at 207-391-9127.
